On Monday, August 26, DC Public Schools and many public charter schools will welcome students back for the 2024-2025 school year. As a former educator, I always love the energy of this time of year as schools fill back up with students and fresh school supplies. Investing in our Ward 5 schools is how we build healthy communities and ensure a bright future for all of us.
Tomorrow, I hope you’ll head to the Ward 5 Education Equity Committee’s Back-to-School giveaway at Wheatley Education Campus (1299 Neal St NE) in Trinidad from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. This years-long tradition is a community celebration of our students, and provides free backpacks and school supplies to any in need as the academic year kicks off. Join neighbors for a fun-filled day including free snacks, games, and more!
I’m also excited to share a save-the-date with you for this year’s Ward 5 Day! A tradition dating back to the days of Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Sr., I was proud to revive Ward 5 Day last year. This year’s celebration will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center (1100 Michigan Ave NE). In the days leading up to Ward 5 Day, you’ll be able to join neighbors for pop-up events across the Ward during Ward 5 Week, September 16-21. Note a change from last year: the 2024 Ward 5 Awards Ceremony will take place in December as part of the Ward 5 Holiday Party. Mark your calendar, and help us spread the word!
