Dear Ward 5 neighbors,
The redevelopment of the Providence Hospital campus in Ward 5 has been a long time coming. I, along with neighbors, want to seize the opportunity to reimagine the campus. That’s why I wrote to Attorney General Scwalb this week, urging him to help move the Providence redevelopment project forward.
As I outlined in my letter, the redevelopment of the Providence Hospital campus is critically important to the future of Ward 5. Currently, the campus occupies over 20 acres of underutilized space, including asphalt parking lots and vacant buildings that can and must be transformed. The real estate developers at Vision PH have deep ties to the District and have successfully developed projects such as the Townhomes at Michigan Park in Ward 5. For the Providence redevelopment, they plan to build approximately 250 to 300 townhomes and 120 multifamily homes on the campus, with more than 20 percent designated as affordable housing. They also intend to create parks, open spaces, and a field on the campus, while reserving space for an urgent care clinic—a key demand of Ward 5 neighbors. This redevelopment project is expected to generate upwards of $10 million annually for the District in property, sales, and income taxes.
I am concerned about the negative consequences of further delays in completing the sale of the Providence Hospital campus. Attorney General Scwalb has been a valuable partner to Ward 5 and me, and I appreciate his dedicated work on behalf of District residents. I trust that, with his support, we can see the Providence redevelopment project move forward. You can read the letter I shared in this week’s newsletter.
