Statement on DC’s Right to Self-Governance

District residents have the full responsibility of citizenship—paying more taxes per capita than any state, and having our residents participating in every war our country has ever fought—but without the full rights of citizenship. This includes a lack of voting representation in Congress and a limited ability to self-govern. For 50 years of Home Rule, the District has demostrated a remarkable ability to effectively run our beautiful city. We have exemplary fiscal governance with nearly 30 consecutive balanced budgets and a AAA bond rating, the lowest crime rates in 30 years, the largest annual population growth in nearly a decade in 2024, three consecutive years of increased enrollment at DC schools, and we are the fastest improving urban school district in the country.

The District’s more than 700,000 residents will defend Home Rule as we reassert our right to full democratic representation.
