We will keep escalating until we see every address in Ward 5 caught up on their trash and recycling collections. Here are the latest updates we have from DPW:
- They are focusing on areas with the most severe disruptions, and in Ward 5, they shared that those areas include several blocks in each of the following neighborhoods:
- Bloomingdale
- Brookland
- Carver Langston
- Eckington
- Lamond Riggs
- Michigan Park
- Truxton Circle
- Trinidad
- Queens Chapel
- Approximately 80 seasonal workers previously assigned to leaf collection are being reassigned to support trash and recycling pickup. Residents may see collection occurring with non-dump trucks as crews work to reduce the backlog.
- The city is also exploring contracting with private haulers to help stabilize service and clear outstanding collections.
Neighbors can trust that the unacceptable conditions will be a focus of the Council’s upcoming oversight hearing of DPW’s government witnesses. Public witnesses testified at a hearing today, and the record is still open for written comment which you can submit here if you want to weigh in on your experience with DPW’s performance. Government witnesses will appear before the Council on March 4.
Please know that my team and I are committed to holding District government accountable to work for you. I encourage you to keep making 311 calls, and be sure to submit new tickets if your existing tickets get closed without resolution. I also invite you to keep alerting my team (ward5contact@dccouncil.gov, 202-724-8028) as we work to amplify the needs of Ward 5 residents directly with the responsible agencies. Sincerely, Zachary |
