This week, the Council wrapped up its final vote on the Fiscal Year 2027 budget on Tuesday, July 7. As a reminder, here and here are recaps of our Ward 5 budget wins. I am proud of the wins that we secured on behalf of our Ward 5 neighbors and our youth, even in a tough budget year. These accomplishments will help set our community up for success for years to come.
From investments in Langdon Park and Community Center and the New York Avenue Recreation Center to restoring multiple Family Success Centers and the Credible Messengers program, these budget wins reflect our dedication to supporting our neighbors in the ways that matter most. Thank you to all of our neighbors who shared feedback with us during this budget cycle, from direct advocacy to participation in resolutions. Your input is essential to move the needle forward on all our initiatives in support of Ward 5 and the Committee on Youth Affairs.
Council Recess – July 15 through September 15
Moving forward, Council will meet next Tuesday, July 14 before the beginning of Council Recess. Feel free to watch that meeting here. Council Recess will officially begin on July 15 and finish on September 15. As a reminder, during Recess there will be no Council hearings, roundtables, or legislative meetings, but our office will remain open throughout this period.
Ward 5 Day – September 19
As one of our summer initiatives, our office will be finalizing preparations for our annual Ward 5 Day, a community tradition dating back to Harry Thomas Sr. This is an incredible opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate Ward 5 with food, activities, and so much more. Please save the date for Ward 5 Day on Saturday, September 19, and we look forward to sharing more details with you soon!
RFK Draft Plan – Open for Feedback through August 14
This week, the District has released a draft master plan for the future RFK campus that includes new housing, parks, improved access to the Anacostia River, retail, and the proposed Commanders stadium, with at least 30% of new homes designated as affordable. The plan reflects community input gathered so far, but additional feedback is sought before the proposal is finalized this fall. Neighbors are encouraged to review the draft plan and share their thoughts during the public comment period to help shape the future of the RFK campus. Residents can submit feedback online here through August 14. The city will also host community meetings and an in-person public hearing on August 1 before finalizing the master plan.
